About Achill Island
- The Slievemore Deserted Village on Achill Island is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of a pre-Famine Irish settlement in the country. The village, which consists of over a hundred stone cottages arranged along a single street on the slopes of Slievemore mountain, was abandoned during and after the Great Famine of the 1840s, and the ruins of the cottages — many still standing to roof height — give a vivid impression of the scale of the community that once lived here. The village is also associated with the practice of "booley" farming, in which families moved their cattle to the mountain pastures in summer and lived in temporary shelters, returning to the main village in winter.
