About Ardrishaig
- The Crinan Canal, which begins at Ardrishaig and ends at Crinan on the Sound of Jura, was built between 1793 and 1801 to provide a shortcut for fishing boats and trading vessels travelling between the Clyde and the west coast of Scotland. The canal, which is nine miles long and has fifteen locks, was designed by John Rennie and later improved by Thomas Telford, and it remains in use today as a popular route for pleasure craft. Queen Victoria used the canal on her visit to the Western Isles in 1847, and her account of the journey helped to popularise the Argyll coast as a tourist destination.
