About Axminster

  • Axminster carpets have been made in the town since 1755, when Thomas Whitty — inspired by a large Turkish carpet he had seen in London — developed a method of hand-knotting pile carpets on a loom. Whitty's carpets, which were of exceptional quality, attracted royal patronage and were installed in some of the grandest houses in England. The original Axminster carpet factory closed in 1835, but the tradition was revived in the twentieth century, and Axminster Carpets continues to manufacture carpets in the town today. The name "Axminster" has become a generic term for a style of woven carpet, and Axminster-style carpets are now made by manufacturers around the world.
