About Ayresome
- Ayresome Park, which stood in this neighbourhood from 1903 until its demolition in 1997, was the home of Middlesbrough Football Club for 92 years and one of the most atmospheric football grounds in the north-east of England. The ground hosted three matches in the 1966 FIFA World Cup — including the famous match in which North Korea defeated Italy 1–0 — and was the scene of many memorable moments in Middlesbrough's history. The club moved to the new Riverside Stadium in 1995, and the Ayresome Park site was redeveloped as housing, with the original gates preserved as a memorial to the ground's history. The gates, which stand at the entrance to the housing development, are a reminder of the central role that football has played in the life of Middlesbrough and Teesside.
