About Baldersdale
- Hannah Hauxwell (1926–2021) became one of the most celebrated figures in British television history following the broadcast of the documentary Too Long a Winter in 1973, which depicted her solitary life on Low Birk Hatt Farm in Baldersdale. Hauxwell, who had lived alone on the farm since the death of her parents and uncle, survived on a tiny income and without electricity or running water, and her quiet dignity and philosophical acceptance of her circumstances moved millions of viewers. The documentary led to a series of follow-up programmes and books, and Hauxwell became a beloved figure in British public life. She eventually left the farm in 1988 and spent her later years in a care home in Barnard Castle.
