About Ballycastle
- The Ould Lammas Fair, held in Ballycastle every August Bank Holiday weekend, is the oldest fair in Ireland — a market that has been held continuously since 1606 and that is one of the most important traditional events in the Northern Irish calendar. The fair, which takes place in the town centre and on the seafront, attracts tens of thousands of visitors and is famous for its traditional foods — dulse (dried seaweed) and yellowman (a hard toffee) — that have been sold at the fair for centuries. The fair's combination of livestock trading, street entertainment, and traditional food makes it one of the most authentic surviving examples of an Irish country fair.
- Rathlin Island, which lies six miles off the coast from Ballycastle and is reached by ferry, is the only inhabited offshore island in Northern Ireland — a community of around 150 people who live on an L-shaped island of extraordinary natural beauty. The island is one of the most important seabird colonies in Ireland, with over 250,000 birds including puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes nesting on the cliffs of the West Light in the summer months. The island is also associated with Robert the Bruce, who is said to have sheltered in a cave on Rathlin in 1306 and to have been inspired to continue his struggle for Scottish independence by watching a spider repeatedly attempt to spin its web.
- Fair Head, the dramatic basalt headland that rises to 196 metres above the sea at the eastern end of Ballycastle Bay, is one of the most spectacular natural features on the Causeway Coast — a cliff of extraordinary scale and grandeur that offers views across the North Channel to the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland, just 12 miles away. The headland, which is managed by the National Trust, is one of the most important geological sites in Northern Ireland, and the combination of the basalt columns, the views across to Scotland, and the wildlife of the cliff face makes it one of the most rewarding destinations on the Causeway Coast.
