About Ballymena
- Slemish Mountain, the distinctive basalt plug that rises above the Antrim plateau a few miles from Ballymena, is one of the most important sites in the history of Christianity in Ireland — the mountain where St Patrick is said to have worked as a shepherd during his captivity in Ireland in the early 5th century. Patrick, who was captured by Irish raiders from his home in Roman Britain and brought to Ireland as a slave, spent six years on Slemish before escaping and returning to Britain, where he later trained as a priest and returned to Ireland as a missionary. The annual pilgrimage to Slemish on St Patrick's Day, which attracts thousands of people to the mountain, is one of the most important religious events in County Antrim.
- Galgorm Castle, a few miles from Ballymena, is one of the most important historic houses in County Antrim — a 17th-century castle that has been converted into a luxury hotel and spa, and that is one of the most popular wedding and leisure destinations in Northern Ireland. The castle, which was built in 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue, is set in 163 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Maine, and it has been carefully restored to preserve its historic character while providing modern facilities. The castle's spa, which is one of the largest in Ireland, has made Galgorm one of the most important leisure destinations in the north of Ireland.
- The Glens of Antrim, the nine valleys that run from the Antrim plateau to the sea between Larne and Ballycastle, are one of the most beautiful and distinctive landscapes in Ireland — a series of wooded glens, waterfalls, and coastal villages that have been shaped by the geology of the basalt plateau and the erosion of the rivers that flow through them. The glens, which were relatively isolated until the construction of the Antrim coast road in the 1830s, preserved a Gaelic-speaking community and a tradition of Irish culture that survived longer here than in most other parts of Ulster. Glenariff, the largest and most spectacular of the glens, is known as the Queen of the Glens and is one of the most popular walking destinations in Northern Ireland.
