About Bilsthorpe
- Bilsthorpe Colliery was one of the most productive coal mines in Nottinghamshire during the twentieth century and was at the centre of the bitter miners' strike of 1984–85, when the Nottinghamshire coalfield was divided between miners who supported the strike and those who continued to work. The village was one of the communities most affected by the closure of the pit in 1997, which brought to an end a century of coal mining in the area. Rufford Abbey, which lies close to Bilsthorpe, is a ruined Cistercian abbey founded in the twelfth century and is now a country park managed by Nottinghamshire County Council, with formal gardens, a lake, and a craft centre.
