About Bixter

  • The Tingwall Valley, in which Bixter is situated, was the site of the Althing — the ancient Norse parliament of Shetland — which met at a small island in the Loch of Tingwall from the Viking Age until the fifteenth century. The Althing was the supreme legislative and judicial assembly of Shetland under Norse rule and its meetings were attended by representatives from all parts of the islands. The Loch of Tingwall is now one of the most productive trout fishing lochs in Shetland and is managed as a fishery by the Shetland Anglers Association. Scalloway Castle, which lies close to Bixter, was built in 1600 by the notorious Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney, and is one of the most impressive castle ruins in Shetland.
