About Tonge

  • Tonge is home to Hall i' th' Wood, a remarkable timber-framed manor house that dates from the late fifteenth century and is one of the finest examples of vernacular domestic architecture in Lancashire. The hall is famous as the place where Samuel Crompton invented the spinning mule in 1779, a machine that combined the best features of the spinning jenny and the water frame and transformed the cotton industry. Crompton was too poor to patent his invention and received little financial reward for it during his lifetime, though a public subscription eventually raised £500 for him in 1812, a fraction of the fortune his invention had generated for others.
