About Bontnewydd
- Bontnewydd sits close to the site of Segontium, the Roman auxiliary fort built around AD 77 to guard the western end of the Roman road network in North Wales. The fort, which lies on the outskirts of Caernarfon, was garrisoned for more than three centuries and is one of the most extensively excavated Roman sites in Wales. The area around Bontnewydd has also yielded important prehistoric finds, including Palaeolithic human remains discovered in a cave at Pontnewydd in the 1980s that are among the oldest human fossils found in Wales, dating to approximately 230,000 years ago.
