About Brae
- Brae is dominated by the Sullom Voe oil terminal, which was built in the 1970s to process crude oil and natural gas piped ashore from the North Sea oilfields. At its peak in the 1980s the terminal was the largest oil terminal in Europe and handled more than a million barrels of oil per day, transforming the economy of Shetland and generating the substantial oil revenues that have funded the Shetland Charitable Trust, one of the wealthiest local charitable foundations in Britain. The terminal continues to operate, though at reduced capacity, and remains the economic anchor of the northern Mainland. Busta House, a sixteenth-century laird's house on the shores of the voe, is one of the oldest inhabited buildings in Shetland.
