About Carrickfergus
- Carrickfergus Castle, which stands on a basalt outcrop above Belfast Lough, is the best-preserved Norman castle in Ireland — a fortress that has been continuously occupied since it was built by John de Courcy in the 1180s and that has played a central role in the history of Ulster for over 800 years. The castle was captured by King John in 1210, besieged by Robert the Bruce in 1315, and used as a prison and a military barracks until the 20th century. The castle's great hall, keep, and curtain wall survive in remarkable completeness, and the castle is one of the most important medieval monuments in Northern Ireland.
- Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, was the son of Ulster-Scots immigrants who emigrated from the Carrickfergus area to South Carolina in 1765. The Andrew Jackson Cottage at Boneybefore, a few miles from Carrickfergus, is a reconstruction of the type of cottage that the Jackson family would have lived in before their emigration, and it tells the story of the Ulster-Scots diaspora that shaped the history of the United States. Jackson's connection with Carrickfergus is one of the most important examples of the Ulster-Scots contribution to American history, and the cottage is one of the most visited heritage attractions in County Antrim.
- The Antrim coast road, which runs from Carrickfergus to Ballycastle along the shore of Belfast Lough and the North Channel, is one of the most scenic coastal roads in Ireland — a route that passes through the Glens of Antrim, the Giant's Causeway, and the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge in a journey of extraordinary beauty. The road, which was built in the 1830s by the engineer William Bald, was one of the most ambitious road-building projects in Ireland in the 19th century, and it opened up the Antrim coast to visitors for the first time. The coast road is now one of the most popular tourist routes in Northern Ireland.
