About Chelmsford
- Chelmsford is the birthplace of radio as a commercial technology. Guglielmo Marconi established his first wireless factory in Hall Street in 1899, and it was from Chelmsford that the world's first advertised public entertainment broadcast was transmitted in June 1920 — a concert by the opera singer Dame Nellie Melba that was heard across Europe and as far away as Newfoundland. The Marconi Company, which grew from this factory, became one of the most important electronics and communications businesses in the world, and the city's connection with the invention of radio is commemorated by a blue plaque on the site of the original factory and by the Chelmsford Museum's collection of early wireless equipment.
- Hylands House, a neoclassical villa set in 574 acres of parkland on the western edge of Chelmsford, is one of the finest country houses in Essex — a building whose elegant white facade and landscaped grounds have made it one of the most photographed houses in the county. The house was built in the early 18th century and remodelled several times, most extensively in the 1820s when it was given its current neoclassical appearance. The estate is now owned by Chelmsford City Council and is used for a range of events including the V Festival, which was held in the grounds for many years and attracted audiences of over 80,000. The house itself has been carefully restored and is open to the public.
- Essex County Cricket Club, one of the oldest and most successful county cricket clubs in England, has its headquarters at the County Ground in Chelmsford and has won the County Championship seven times. The club produced several England internationals including Graham Gooch, who captained England and scored more Test runs than any other English batsman, and Nasser Hussain, who captained England in the early 2000s. The County Ground, which holds around 6,500 spectators, is one of the most atmospheric cricket grounds in the country, and the club's success in the 2010s — winning the County Championship in 2017 and 2019 — brought a new generation of supporters to the game.
