About Coundon
- Coundon grew up around the coal industry in the nineteenth century, with several collieries sinking shafts in the area during the Victorian era. The village is close to Escomb, which contains one of the finest surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in England — St John's Church at Escomb dates from the seventh century and is built largely from Roman stones taken from the nearby fort at Binchester (Vinovia). Auckland Castle, a short drive away in Bishop Auckland, is the historic residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham and houses one of the most important collections of Spanish paintings in Britain.
