About Croft-on-Tees
- Lewis Carroll — the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson — spent much of his childhood at Croft Rectory, where his father was rector from 1843 to 1868. Carroll wrote and illustrated several early stories and poems at Croft, and the village is believed to have inspired elements of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The rectory garden, with its unusual topiary and the nearby church with its carved wooden pew, are thought to have contributed to the dreamlike imagery of the Alice books.
- Croft Racecourse, on the outskirts of the village, is one of the most important motorsport venues in the north of England. The circuit hosts rounds of the British Touring Car Championship, the British Superbike Championship, and various other national motorsport series. The circuit was built on the site of a Second World War RAF airfield, and the long straight that forms part of the circuit follows the line of the original runway.
- Croft-on-Tees sits on the boundary between North Yorkshire and County Durham, and the medieval bridge over the Tees — built in the 14th century — marks the historic boundary between the two counties. The bridge is one of the oldest in the north of England and is a Grade I listed structure. The village of Croft is in North Yorkshire, while the north bank of the Tees is in County Durham.
