About Dartmouth
- Britannia Royal Naval College, perched on a hill above Dartmouth, has been training Royal Navy officers since 1905. The college, designed by Sir Aston Webb who also designed the façade of Buckingham Palace, is one of the most impressive Edwardian buildings in England. Among its alumni are King Charles III, King George VI, Prince Philip, and generations of senior naval officers. The college is still an active training establishment and is a defining feature of the Dartmouth skyline.
- Dartmouth Castle, at the mouth of the Dart estuary, is one of the earliest purpose-built artillery castles in England, constructed in the 1480s to defend the harbour against French raids. The castle was designed to work in conjunction with Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank, with a chain stretched between them to block enemy ships. The castle is managed by English Heritage and offers spectacular views over the estuary and out to sea.
- The Dartmouth Royal Regatta, held every August, is one of the oldest and most prestigious sailing regattas in the UK, dating back to 1822. The three-day event attracts hundreds of sailing vessels of all types, from traditional working boats to modern racing yachts, and is accompanied by a programme of onshore entertainment, fireworks, and a Red Arrows display. The regatta is the social highlight of the South Devon sailing calendar.
