About Downpatrick
- Downpatrick is the burial place of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, whose grave is marked by a large granite slab in the churchyard of Down Cathedral. Patrick, who died around 461 AD, is said to have been buried at Downpatrick, and the site has been a place of pilgrimage since the early medieval period. The cathedral, which was built on the site of an earlier monastery, is one of the most important Christian sites in Ireland, and the annual St Patrick's Day celebrations in Downpatrick — which include a parade, a festival, and a pilgrimage to the grave — are among the most important in Ireland.
- Inch Abbey, a few miles from Downpatrick, is one of the most beautifully situated monastic ruins in Ireland — a Cistercian abbey founded in 1180 by John de Courcy on an island in the River Quoile, surrounded by water meadows and reed beds that give it an atmosphere of extraordinary tranquillity. The abbey, which was one of the most important Cistercian houses in Ulster, was dissolved in the 16th century and its buildings fell into ruin, but the remains of the church, the cloister, and the chapter house survive in a remarkable state of preservation. The abbey's setting, with the Mourne Mountains visible in the distance, is one of the most evocative in County Down.
