About Eaglesham
- Eaglesham's most extraordinary moment in history came on the night of 10 May 1941, when Rudolf Hess — the Deputy Führer of Nazi Germany and Hitler's closest political ally — parachuted from a Messerschmitt Bf 110 onto the moor just outside the village. Hess had flown solo from Augsburg in Bavaria on a self-appointed peace mission, intending to negotiate a separate peace between Britain and Germany. He was captured by a local farmer, David McLean, who found him in a field near his cottage, and was subsequently taken into custody by the Home Guard. Hess spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Britain and was later sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nuremberg trials. The circumstances of his flight remain one of the great mysteries of the Second World War.
