About Enniskillen
- Enniskillen is built on an island in the River Erne between Upper and Lower Lough Erne — a position that has given it a strategic importance since the medieval period and that gives the town its distinctive character as a place surrounded by water. The Fermanagh Lakelands, which extend across much of County Fermanagh, are one of the most important water-based landscapes in Ireland, with over 150 islands in the two loughs and a network of rivers and waterways that provide exceptional opportunities for boating, fishing, and wildlife watching. The loughs are particularly famous for their coarse fishing, which attracts anglers from across Europe.
- Marble Arch Caves, a few miles from Enniskillen, are one of the most spectacular cave systems in Ireland — a network of underground passages, rivers, and chambers that were carved by water through the limestone of the Cuilcagh Mountain over millions of years. The caves, which were opened to the public in 1985, offer guided boat tours through the underground river and walking tours through the cave chambers, and they are one of the most popular tourist attractions in County Fermanagh. The caves are part of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, which was designated in 2004 and covers an area of 1,000 square kilometres of the Fermanagh and Cavan countryside.
- The Enniskillen bombing of 8 November 1987, in which an IRA bomb killed 11 people at a Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the town's war memorial, was one of the most shocking atrocities of the Troubles — an event that provoked widespread condemnation and that is remembered as one of the darkest moments of the conflict. Gordon Wilson, whose daughter Marie was killed in the bombing, became a symbol of reconciliation when he described holding his daughter's hand as she died and said that he bore no ill will towards her killers — a statement of forgiveness that was heard around the world and that helped to shift public opinion against the IRA's campaign of violence.
