About Faversham
- Shepherd Neame, the brewery founded in Faversham in 1698, is the oldest brewery in Britain still in continuous operation — a claim supported by documentary evidence of brewing on the site since at least 1698, though the company believes brewing has taken place there since the 12th century. The brewery, which still uses water from its own artesian well and hops from the surrounding Kent countryside, produces Spitfire, Bishops Finger, and Master Brew, among other beers, and it is one of the few remaining family-owned regional breweries in England. The brewery tours, which take visitors through the malting, brewing, and conditioning processes, are one of the most popular attractions in North Kent, and the brewery's pubs — which are found across Kent and London — are among the most characterful in the south-east.
- Faversham is one of the best-preserved medieval market towns in England — a place where the street pattern, the building stock, and the social geography of the medieval town survive with remarkable completeness. The Market Place, dominated by the Guildhall — a timber-framed building raised on stone arches in the 16th century — is one of the finest medieval market squares in Kent, and the surrounding streets contain over 400 listed buildings, including merchants' houses, inns, and workshops that span five centuries of architectural history. The town's preservation owes much to its relative economic stagnation in the 19th and 20th centuries — the decline of the gunpowder industry and the failure of the railway to bring significant growth meant that the medieval fabric was never swept away by Victorian redevelopment.
- Faversham was the centre of the British gunpowder industry for over 400 years — the Chart Gunpowder Mills, established in the 16th century on the banks of Faversham Creek, were the oldest gunpowder mills in the world and supplied the British armed forces with gunpowder from the reign of Elizabeth I to the First World War. The mills, which used water power to grind the ingredients of gunpowder — charcoal, sulphur, and saltpetre — were an extremely dangerous operation, and explosions were frequent; the worst, in 1916, killed 108 workers and destroyed much of the surrounding area. The Chart Mills have been preserved as a museum and are the only surviving water-powered gunpowder mills in the world, offering a unique insight into a dangerous and now vanished industry.
