About Folkestone
- Folkestone is the British terminus of the Channel Tunnel — the 50-kilometre undersea rail tunnel that connects England to France and was opened in 1994 after seven years of construction. The tunnel, which runs at a depth of up to 75 metres below the seabed, carries Eurostar passenger trains between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord in around two hours and fifteen minutes, as well as Le Shuttle car and lorry trains between Folkestone and Coquelles near Calais. The construction of the tunnel was one of the largest engineering projects in European history, employing 13,000 workers and using eleven tunnel boring machines, and it transformed the relationship between Britain and the Continent — making it possible to travel between London and Paris faster than between London and Manchester.
- Folkestone's Creative Quarter, centred on the Old High Street and the network of lanes and passages around it, is one of the most successful examples of arts-led regeneration in Britain — a formerly derelict area of the town that has been transformed since the early 2000s into a thriving community of artists' studios, galleries, independent shops, and cafés. The regeneration was driven by the Folkestone Triennial, an international contemporary art festival held every three years since 2008, which has commissioned permanent public artworks by artists including Tracey Emin, Mark Wallinger, and Richard Woods, and has attracted visitors from across the country. The Creative Quarter has become a model for other seaside towns seeking to reinvent themselves through culture and creativity.
- The Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, on the clifftop between Folkestone and Dover, commemorates the 2,937 aircrew who flew in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940 — the air campaign in which the Royal Air Force defeated the Luftwaffe's attempt to achieve air superiority over southern England and prevent a German invasion. The memorial, which was opened in 1993, consists of a lone airman figure looking out to sea, surrounded by a wing-shaped garden containing the names of all the aircrew who took part in the battle. The clifftop location, with its views across the Channel to France, gives the memorial an extraordinary power — visitors stand on the same ground over which the Spitfires and Hurricanes fought, looking across the narrow strip of water that the battle was fought to defend.
