About Glossop
- Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District at 2,087 feet, is 8 miles from Glossop and was the site of the famous Mass Trespass of 1932 — a pivotal moment in the history of the right to roam in Britain. Hundreds of walkers deliberately trespassed on the privately owned moorland to protest against the exclusion of the public from open countryside.
- The Longdendale Trail, which passes through Glossop, follows the route of the former Woodhead railway line through the Longdendale Valley. The trail is part of the Trans Pennine Trail and offers spectacular walking and cycling through some of the most dramatic moorland scenery in the Peak District.
- Glossop was the birthplace of Louis Paulhan, the French aviator who won the Daily Mail prize for the first flight from London to Manchester in 1910. Paulhan completed the 183-mile flight in just over 4 hours, beating his rival Claude Grahame-White in one of the most dramatic aviation contests of the early 20th century.
