About Greenwich
- The Prime Meridian of the World passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, established by King Charles II in 1675 to improve navigation at sea. The meridian, at 0° longitude, divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres and is the reference point for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the world's time standard. Visitors to the observatory can stand astride the meridian line and have their photograph taken in two hemispheres simultaneously.
- The Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1712, is one of the finest examples of English Baroque architecture. The buildings were originally the Royal Hospital for Seamen, providing accommodation and care for retired and disabled naval ratings. The Painted Hall, decorated by Sir James Thornhill between 1707 and 1726, is one of the most spectacular painted interiors in Britain and has been described as the "Sistine Chapel of the UK".
- The Cutty Sark, moored at Greenwich Pier, is the world's only surviving tea clipper and one of the fastest sailing ships ever built. Launched in 1869, the ship was designed to carry tea from China to Britain in the shortest possible time, racing against rival clippers across the world's oceans. The ship is now a museum and visitor attraction, restored after a serious fire in 2007, and is a Grade I listed building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
