About Knaresborough
- Knaresborough Castle, perched on a cliff above the River Nidd gorge, is one of the most dramatically sited castles in England. The castle was built in the 12th century and was a royal fortress for much of the medieval period. The keep and the courtyard are open to visitors, and the views from the castle walls over the gorge and the town are outstanding.
- Mother Shipton's Cave, on the banks of the Nidd below the town, is said to be the birthplace of the 15th-century prophetess Ursula Southeil, known as Mother Shipton. The cave is one of the oldest tourist attractions in England, having been open to visitors since 1630. The adjacent Dropping Well, a petrifying spring that turns objects placed in it to stone, is one of the most unusual natural features in Yorkshire.
- The Knaresborough Viaduct, built in 1851 to carry the railway over the Nidd gorge, is one of the most photographed structures in North Yorkshire. The viaduct has four arches and stands 30 metres above the river, and the view of the viaduct from the riverside walk below is one of the most iconic in Yorkshire.
- The oldest chemist's shop in England, established in 1720, is still trading in Knaresborough's market place. The shop has been dispensing medicines and remedies for over 300 years and is one of the most remarkable historic businesses in the country.
