About Linlithgow
- Linlithgow Palace, a Category A listed building and scheduled ancient monument, was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots on 8 December 1542. The palace was a favourite residence of the Scottish royal family from the fifteenth century and is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland. It is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public.
- Linlithgow Loch, which lies immediately below the palace, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the most important freshwater lochs in central Scotland for wintering wildfowl. The loch is managed as a nature reserve and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers.
- The Union Canal passes through Linlithgow and the town is home to the Linlithgow Canal Centre, which operates boat trips along the canal and houses a small museum dedicated to the history of the waterway. The canal was built between 1818 and 1822 and is now a popular leisure and cycling route.
- Linlithgow has a strong tradition of civic pageantry. The Linlithgow Marches, held annually in June, is one of the oldest civic ceremonies in Scotland, dating back to at least the seventeenth century. The event involves a procession through the town led by the Deacon's Court and is attended by thousands of spectators.
