About Lochgelly
- Lochgelly is famous — or infamous — for the tawse, a leather strap used for corporal punishment in Scottish schools. The Lochgelly tawse was manufactured by a local saddler, John J. Dick, and became the standard implement of school discipline across Scotland from the late nineteenth century until corporal punishment was banned in state schools in 1987.
- The Lochgelly Colliery, which operated from 1895 to 1966, was one of the most productive pits in the Fife coalfield and at its peak employed over 2,000 men. The colliery was the economic heart of the town for seventy years, and its closure had a profound impact on the community.
- Lochore Meadows Country Park, a short drive from Lochgelly, was created on the site of the former Lochore Colliery and its bing. The 1,200-acre park includes Loch Ore, a beach, woodland, a golf course, and a visitor centre, and is one of the most successful examples of post-industrial land reclamation in Scotland.
