About Longformacus
- Longformacus is one of the most isolated villages in the Scottish Borders, sitting in a deep valley in the Lammermuir Hills with no through road. The village is reached by a single-track road from Duns to the south or from Gifford to the north, and the surrounding moorland is some of the most remote in southern Scotland. The village has a population of fewer than 100 people, and the community is centred on the parish church and the village hall.
- The Dye Water, which flows through the valley below Longformacus, is a tributary of the Whiteadder and ultimately the Tweed. The river rises on the high Lammermuir plateau and flows south through a series of deep, sheltered valleys before joining the Whiteadder near Abbey St Bathans. The river is a good trout stream, and the pools below Longformacus are popular with fly fishers in the summer.
- The Lammermuir Hills above Longformacus are managed primarily for grouse shooting, and the heather moorland supports one of the highest densities of red grouse in Scotland. The hills are also important for upland wading birds — curlew, golden plover, and dunlin all breed on the high ground — and for birds of prey, including merlin, peregrine, and short-eared owl. The Southern Upland Way crosses the Lammermuirs above the village.
