About Maryport
- The Senhouse Roman Museum in Maryport holds one of the finest collections of Roman altars in Britain, many of them discovered at the adjacent fort of Alauna — a garrison on the western end of the Hadrian's Wall frontier system. The collection includes altars dedicated to Jupiter, Mars, and a range of local deities worshipped by the Roman soldiers stationed here.
- Maryport was founded as a planned town in 1749 by Humphrey Senhouse, who named it after his wife Mary. Within 50 years it had become one of the busiest coal-exporting ports on the west coast of England, with ships carrying Cumberland coal to Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the American colonies.
- Fletcher Christian, the leader of the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789, was born near Maryport at Moorland Close, Eaglesfield. A plaque in the town commemorates his connection to the area.
