About Middleham
- Middleham Castle, managed by English Heritage, was the childhood home of Richard III and one of the most important castles in the north of England in the 15th century. The castle was the seat of the powerful Neville family and later passed to Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who spent much of his youth here. The castle is one of the largest in Yorkshire and the ruins are among the most impressive in the north of England.
- Middleham is one of the most important racehorse training centres in England, with over a dozen training yards on the high ground above the town. The gallops on Middleham Low Moor are used by hundreds of horses each morning, and the sight of strings of racehorses exercising on the moor is one of the most distinctive features of the town. Several Middleham-trained horses have won the Grand National and other major races.
- The town has a fine market square with a market cross and a range of independent shops, cafes, and pubs. The weekly market, held every Tuesday and Saturday, has been a feature of the town since the medieval period.
- Bolton Castle, a few miles to the west, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England. The castle was the prison of Mary Queen of Scots from 1568 to 1569 and is open to visitors.
