About Newport
- The Newport Rising of November 1839, in which around 5,000 Chartist workers marched on the town demanding political reform, was the last armed uprising in British history — an event that ended in tragedy when soldiers opened fire on the marchers outside the Westgate Hotel, killing at least 22 people and wounding many more. The Chartists, who demanded universal male suffrage, the secret ballot, and other democratic reforms, were the most important working-class political movement of the 19th century, and the Newport Rising was the most dramatic episode in their campaign. The Chartist Mural in the city centre commemorates the rising and the men who died for the cause of democracy.
- Caerleon, a few miles from Newport, was one of the most important Roman military bases in Britain — the fortress of the Second Augustan Legion, which was stationed here from around 75 AD to the late 3rd century. The fortress, which covered an area of 50 hectares, was one of only three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain, and the remains that survive — including the amphitheatre, the barracks, and the baths — are among the most impressive Roman remains in Wales. The amphitheatre at Caerleon, which could hold up to 6,000 spectators, is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in Britain.
- Newport Transporter Bridge, which spans the Usk between Newport and Pillgwenlly, is one of only eight transporter bridges still in operation in the world — a structure built in 1906 that carries a suspended gondola across the river, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to cross without the need for a high-level bridge. The bridge, which is 196 metres long and 54 metres high, is one of the most unusual and impressive engineering structures in Wales, and it has been designated as a Grade I listed building. The bridge is one of only two transporter bridges in Wales — the other is the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge — and it is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Newport.
