About Ormiston
- John Cockburn of Ormiston, who inherited the estate in 1714, was one of the most influential agricultural improvers in Scottish history. Cockburn introduced new crop rotations, enclosed fields, and improved drainage to his estate, transforming the productivity of East Lothian farming. He also laid out the village of Ormiston on a planned grid pattern, providing his tenants with improved housing and encouraging the development of local industries.
- The Ormiston Yew, which stands in the village, is one of the oldest trees in Scotland and is estimated to be over a thousand years old. The ancient yew is a Category A listed tree and is believed to have been a meeting place for local communities since the medieval period. John Knox is said to have preached under the tree during the early years of the Scottish Reformation.
- Ormiston Hall, the seat of the Cockburn family, was demolished in the nineteenth century, but the planned village that John Cockburn created in the early eighteenth century survives largely intact. The village's wide main street, uniform stone buildings, and rational layout reflect the Enlightenment values of improvement and order that Cockburn embodied.
