About Penicuik
- Penicuik was one of the most important centres of the Scottish paper-making industry from the eighteenth century onwards. The town's mills on the North Esk produced high-quality paper for Edinburgh's printing and publishing trade, and at its peak the industry employed a significant proportion of the local population. The last paper mill in Penicuik closed in 2004, ending over two centuries of continuous production.
- Penicuik House, a Palladian mansion built in the 1760s for Sir James Clerk, was one of the finest country houses in Midlothian before it was gutted by fire in 1899. The shell of the house still stands in its designed landscape and is a Category A listed structure. The estate is managed by the Penicuik House Preservation Trust and the grounds are open to the public.
