- The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of the finest heritage railways in England, has its southern terminus at Pickering. The railway runs steam and diesel trains for 18 miles through the heart of the North York Moors to Whitby on the coast, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery in the national park. The railway carries over 300,000 passengers a year and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yorkshire.
- Pickering Castle, managed by English Heritage, is a well-preserved motte-and-bailey castle built by William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest. The castle was a royal hunting lodge for several medieval kings and the ruins include the keep, the curtain wall, and several towers. The views from the castle walls over the town and the Vale of Pickering are outstanding.
- The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Pickering contains one of the finest sets of medieval wall paintings in England. The paintings, which date from the 15th century and were rediscovered in the 19th century, cover the walls of the nave with scenes from the lives of the saints and the life of Christ.
