About St Albans
- St Albans stands on the site of Verulamium, one of the most important cities in Roman Britain — the third largest city in the province, a municipium with the right of self-government, and the place where the first British Christian martyr, Alban, was executed in the early 3rd century. The Roman city, which covered around 80 hectares, was one of the few in Britain to be granted municipium status, meaning its inhabitants had the rights of Roman citizens, and it was a major centre of trade, administration, and culture. The Verulamium Museum, built over the site of the Roman city, houses one of the finest collections of Roman artefacts in Britain, including extraordinary mosaic floors, painted wall plaster, and everyday objects that bring the life of the Roman city vividly to life.
- St Albans Cathedral, which stands on the hill above the Roman city, is built largely from Roman brick — the builders of the Norman cathedral in the 11th century simply recycled the materials from the ruins of Verulamium, giving the building its distinctive warm red colour. The cathedral is the longest medieval nave in England, stretching 84 metres from west to east, and it contains the shrine of St Alban, which was a major pilgrimage destination in the medieval period. The shrine was destroyed at the Reformation and the fragments were used as building rubble; they were rediscovered in the 19th century and painstakingly reassembled, and the restored shrine is now one of the most moving objects in any English cathedral.
- Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans claims to be the oldest pub in England — a claim disputed by several other establishments, but one that rests on the building's origins as an 8th-century monastic fishing lodge, later converted into a pub. The building's distinctive octagonal shape, which gives it an unusual appearance among English pubs, derives from its origins as a circular structure, and the low ceilings and irregular layout reflect centuries of adaptation and rebuilding. The pub's name refers to the cockfighting that took place in the pit beneath the building — a sport that was legal in England until 1849 — and the fighting pit is still visible in the cellar. Whatever the truth of its age, the Fighting Cocks is one of the most atmospheric pubs in Hertfordshire.
