About St Ives
- St Ives possesses one of only four surviving medieval bridge chapels in England — a small stone oratory built on the six-arched bridge across the Great Ouse in the 15th century, dedicated to St Laurence, and used by travellers crossing the river to pray for safe passage. The bridge itself dates from around 1415 and replaced an earlier wooden structure; the chapel, which projects from the downstream side of the bridge on a corbelled platform, was later used as a dwelling, a warehouse, and a gaol before being restored in the 19th century. The combination of medieval bridge and chapel, reflected in the slow-moving Ouse, is one of the most photographed scenes in Cambridgeshire.
- Oliver Cromwell lived in St Ives for five years between 1631 and 1636, farming land he had inherited, before moving to Ely. A bronze statue of Cromwell stands in the market place, erected in 1901, and the town takes quiet pride in its Cromwellian connection — though the Lord Protector's time here was unremarkable, a period of agricultural obscurity before the Civil War transformed him into the most powerful man in England. The statue shows Cromwell in civilian dress rather than armour, a deliberate choice by the sculptor Hamo Thornycroft to represent the farmer and local man rather than the general.
- The Norris Museum, housed in a 17th-century building on the banks of the Ouse, holds the local history collection for Huntingdonshire — a county that was abolished in 1974 when it was merged with Cambridgeshire. The museum's collections include prehistoric finds from the fens, Roman pottery, medieval artefacts, and a remarkable series of paintings and drawings documenting the fenland landscape before and after drainage. The museum is named after Herbert Ellis Norris, a local solicitor and antiquary who donated his collection to the town in 1933, and it remains one of the best small local museums in the East of England.
