About Torre
- Torre Abbey, founded in 1196 by the Premonstratensian order, is one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in the South West. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the abbey was converted into a private house and later became the home of the Cary family for over 300 years. The abbey is now owned by Torbay Council and operates as a museum and art gallery, with collections of fine art, decorative arts, and local history set within the medieval buildings and their gardens.
- The Spanish Barn at Torre Abbey, a large tithe barn dating from the 12th century, takes its name from the 397 survivors of the Spanish Armada who were imprisoned there in 1588 after their ship, the Nuestra Señora del Rosario, was captured by Sir Francis Drake off the Devon coast. The barn is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Torbay and is a scheduled ancient monument.
