About Wilton
- Wilton International is one of the largest chemical manufacturing complexes in Europe, covering over 2,000 acres on the south bank of the Tees. The site was developed in the 1940s and 1950s as part of the post-war expansion of the British chemical industry, and at its peak employed thousands of workers from across Teesside. The complex produces a wide range of chemical products including plastics, fertilisers, and industrial chemicals.
- Wilton Castle, the ruins of which stand on the edge of the village, was a medieval fortification built by the Bulmer family in the 12th century. The castle was later converted into a country house and was occupied until the 20th century. The ruins are a Grade II listed structure and are one of the few historic buildings to survive in the heavily industrialised Tees Valley.
- The area around Wilton has been transformed by over a century of industrial development, and the landscape is dominated by the chemical plants, pipelines, and storage tanks of the Wilton International complex.
