About Balerno
- The Pentland Hills, which rise immediately behind Balerno, form one of Scotland's most accessible upland areas and have been a recreational resource for Edinburgh residents for centuries. The hills contain a network of reservoirs built in the nineteenth century to supply Edinburgh with fresh water, and the paths around Harlaw and Threipmuir reservoirs are among the most popular walking routes in the Lothians.
- Balerno was the terminus of the Balerno Branch Railway, which ran from Edinburgh Princes Street Station through the Water of Leith valley from 1874 until 1943 for passengers and 1967 for freight. The line served the mills and quarries along the valley and provided a vital commuter link for the villages. The trackbed is now a popular walking and cycling path.
- The village of Balerno has maintained its distinct identity despite being absorbed into the City of Edinburgh in 1975. Local community organisations, including the Balerno Community Trust, work to preserve the village's character and provide facilities for residents, and the village has consistently resisted large-scale housing development that would alter its rural feel.
