About Bathampton
- Bathampton lies on the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs from Bristol to Reading and was one of the most important waterways in the south of England during the canal age. The canal, which was built between 1794 and 1810, passes through some of the most attractive countryside in the west of England, and the towpath provides a popular walking and cycling route between Bath and the surrounding villages. The canal fell into disuse after the arrival of the Great Western Railway in the 1840s but was restored by volunteers in the 1960s and 1970s and is now a popular leisure waterway. The village's position on the edge of Bath — a UNESCO World Heritage City — gives it access to one of the finest collections of Georgian architecture in the world.
