About Bordeaux
- The north coast of Guernsey around Bordeaux is characterised by a complex shoreline of rocky inlets, sandy bays, and offshore reefs that made navigation treacherous for sailing vessels in the days before modern charts and lighthouses. The island's position in the English Channel made it an important waypoint for trade between Britain and France, and Guernsey's merchants grew wealthy on the proceeds of legitimate commerce and, during the eighteenth century, on privateering and smuggling. The granite rock formations of the north coast are among the oldest in the British Isles, formed from volcanic activity more than 600 million years ago.
