About Kaimes
- Kaimes Quarry, which operated in the area for several centuries, provided sandstone for building projects across Edinburgh and the Lothians. The distinctive warm-coloured sandstone from this area can be seen in many of Edinburgh's Victorian buildings, and the quarry's legacy is visible in the landscape of the surrounding area.
- The name Kaimes derives from the Scots word "kaim" or "kame", meaning a ridge or crest of a hill, reflecting the topography of the area. Similar place names are found across Scotland and northern England, all referring to the characteristic ridged landforms left by glacial activity during the last Ice Age.
- The area around Kaimes has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and several archaeological sites in the vicinity attest to the long history of human settlement in this part of Midlothian. The proximity to Edinburgh and the fertile agricultural land of the Lothians made this an attractive location for settlement from the earliest periods of human occupation.
