Local knowledge — Cheap Taxi in Staithes
Staithes is a tiny fishing village on the Cleveland coast, 10 miles north of Whitby. Its cluster of red-roofed cottages crammed into a narrow ravine above a working harbour is one of the most dramatic and picturesque scenes on the Yorkshire coast. The village was the boyhood home of Captain James Cook, who worked in a shop here before going to sea in Whitby.

About Staithes
- Captain James Cook worked as a shop boy in Staithes at the age of 16, employed by William Sanderson in his grocery and haberdashery shop. It was here, according to tradition, that Cook first became fascinated by the sea, watching the fishing boats in the harbour and the ships passing offshore. After 18 months in Staithes, Cook moved to Whitby to begin his apprenticeship as a sailor — the first step on the journey that would take him to the Pacific and make him the greatest explorer of his age.
- Staithes is one of the most unspoiled fishing villages on the Yorkshire coast, its character largely unchanged since the 19th century. The village is built on both sides of a narrow ravine cut by Roxby Beck, and the houses are so tightly packed that some overhang the stream. The village is accessible only on foot from the car park above — the narrow lanes are too steep and narrow for most vehicles.
- The Staithes Group was a colony of artists who worked in and around the village in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, attracted by the dramatic scenery and the picturesque fishing community. The group included Laura Knight, Harold Knight, and Mark Senior, and their paintings of the village and its fishermen are among the most celebrated works of the Yorkshire art scene. Several of their paintings are held in the Whitby Museum.
- Staithes harbour, protected by two stone piers, is still used by a small fleet of crab and lobster boats. The fishermen of Staithes have fished the Cleveland coast for centuries, and the village has a strong tradition of seamanship. The harbour is one of the most photographed in England, its colourful boats and red-roofed cottages providing a scene that has attracted artists and photographers for over a century.
