About Thamesmead
- Thamesmead was built by the Greater London Council from the late 1960s onwards on the former Woolwich Arsenal marshes and was intended as a model new town providing modern housing for thousands of Londoners. The estate's distinctive brutalist architecture, with its elevated walkways, concrete towers, and artificial lakes, was used as the setting for Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. The area is now undergoing major regeneration, with Peabody Trust investing billions of pounds to transform the estate into a new mixed-use neighbourhood with improved transport links.
