Local knowledge — Cheap Taxi in Whitby
Whitby is a fishing port and seaside resort on the North Yorkshire coast, at the mouth of the River Esk. One of the most atmospheric and distinctive towns on the east coast of England, it is famous for its ruined abbey, its connections with Bram Stoker's Dracula, its jet jewellery, and its fish and chips.

About Whitby
- Whitby Abbey, managed by English Heritage, is one of the most dramatically sited ruins in England, perched on the East Cliff above the town. The abbey was founded in 657 AD by St Hilda and was the site of the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD, at which the date of Easter for the English church was decided. The ruins of the 13th-century Gothic church are among the most impressive in the north of England.
- Bram Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by the town's atmosphere, the abbey ruins, and a local story about a Russian ship called the Dmitri to write Dracula. The novel's Count Dracula arrives in England at Whitby, and the town has embraced its Gothic heritage with the biannual Whitby Goth Weekend, one of the largest goth festivals in the world.
- Captain James Cook, the great explorer and navigator, grew up in the nearby village of Great Ayton and served his seafaring apprenticeship in Whitby. The ships that Cook used on his voyages of exploration — Endeavour, Resolution, Discovery, and Adventure — were all built in Whitby. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, housed in the house where Cook lodged as a young man, tells the story of his life and voyages.
- Whitby is famous for its fish and chips, and the town has several fish and chip shops that are regarded as among the finest in England. The combination of fresh fish landed at the harbour and the traditional Yorkshire recipe for batter has made Whitby fish and chips a byword for quality.
