- Staithes is famous as the place where James Cook, the great explorer and navigator, served his apprenticeship as a grocer's boy before going to sea. Cook worked in a shop in Staithes from 1745 to 1746, and the experience of watching the ships in the harbour is said to have inspired his desire to go to sea.
