About Dorchester

- Maiden Castle, the vast Iron Age hillfort on the chalk downland south of Dorchester, is the largest and most complex hillfort in Britain — a massive earthwork enclosing 47 acres, with multiple lines of ramparts and ditches that were built and elaborated over a period of 2,000 years from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The fort was one of the most important settlements in pre-Roman Britain, with a population of several thousand people, and it was captured by the Roman Second Legion under Vespasian in around 43 AD in one of the most dramatic episodes of the Roman conquest.
