About Skelton-in-Cleveland
- Skelton Castle, a Gothic Revival mansion built in the 18th century on the site of a medieval castle, is one of the most unusual country houses in Cleveland. The castle was built by John Hall Stevenson, a friend of Laurence Sterne, who used it as the model for Crazy Castle in his novel Tristram Shandy. The present building is largely the work of the 19th century and is a private residence.

The ironstone mined here was used in the blast furnaces of Teesside, which produced much of the steel used in the construction of the British Empire. The mining industry declined in the early 20th century, and the last mine closed in the 1960s.
