About Stenhouse
- Stenhouse takes its name from the Stenhouse Mansion, a seventeenth-century tower house that still stands in the neighbourhood and is one of the oldest surviving domestic buildings in Edinburgh. The mansion was built by Patrick Ellis, a wealthy Edinburgh merchant, and later served as a farmhouse before being restored and converted to residential use. It is a Category A listed building.
- Saughton Park, which borders Stenhouse, was laid out for the Scottish National Exhibition of 1908 and contains one of Edinburgh's finest formal gardens. The park's Victorian bandstand was restored in 2019 and now hosts regular outdoor concerts and community events throughout the summer months.
- The Union Canal, which passes through the southern edge of Stenhouse, was built between 1818 and 1822 to carry coal from the Lanarkshire coalfields to Edinburgh. The canal is now a popular leisure route managed by Scottish Canals, and the towpath provides a traffic-free walking and cycling connection between Edinburgh and Falkirk.
