Local knowledge — Assisted Travel in Clovenfords
Clovenfords is a small village on the River Tweed, 3 miles west of Galashiels. Once famous for its vineries — which supplied grapes to the Edinburgh market in the 19th century — it is now a quiet residential village with easy access to the Borders Railway at Tweedbank and the walking country of the Tweed valley.

About Clovenfords
- Clovenfords was famous in the 19th century for its vineries — large heated glasshouses that produced grapes for the Edinburgh market. The village's position in the sheltered Tweed valley, with its relatively mild climate, made it ideal for viticulture, and at its peak the Clovenfords vineries supplied a significant proportion of the grapes consumed in Edinburgh. The vineries have long since disappeared, but the village's association with the grape trade is remembered in local history.
- Sir Walter Scott was a regular visitor to Clovenfords, stopping at the village inn on his journeys between Edinburgh and Abbotsford. The inn, which still stands in the village, was a favourite stopping point for travellers on the road between Edinburgh and the Borders, and Scott's visits are commemorated by a plaque on the building. The village is within easy reach of Abbotsford, Scott's home two miles to the east.
- The Borders Railway, which reopened in 2015, has transformed connectivity between Clovenfords and Edinburgh. The nearest station at Tweedbank is just 3 miles away, and the journey to Edinburgh Waverley takes 55 minutes. The railway has made it possible to commute from the Borders to Edinburgh, and has brought new residents and visitors to the area.
- The River Tweed at Clovenfords is one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in Scotland, and the pools below the village are popular with fly fishers in the autumn. The river is managed by the River Tweed Commission, and the fishing rights are divided between several estates. The Tweed here is a broad, powerful river, and the autumn run of salmon — when the fish are running upstream to spawn — is one of the great spectacles of the Borders.
